About us
The main goal of the Spanish Society of Byzantine Studies (Sociedad Española de Bizantinística, SEB) is to promote the scientific study and the knowledge of the Byzantine civilization, it is, the Christian civilization of Greek language and tradition that developed in the Eastern area of the Roman empire and whose capital was Constantinople.
This study encompasses all the fields: History, Art, Archaeology, Linguistics, Philology, Palaeography, Religion, Philosophy, Law, etc. Byzantium acted as a bridge between the Greek Antiquity and Islam as well as European Renaissance, spreading and preserving the ancient texts and, through them, its thought and science. It influenced the Islamic and Romanic Art, sharing its architectonical improvements, its pictorical and mosaic techniques and the ancient iconography. Additionally, Byzantium was a political model for medieval kingdoms and evangelize and taught literacy to the Slavs, whose culture was shaped according to the Byzantine one.
The Spanish Society of Byzantine Studies collaborates with Spanish and foreign institutions who share these interests and goals. It is a member of the International Association of Byzantine Studies (Association Internationale d'Études Byzantines, AIEB). Among its activities, it publishes an academic journal (Estudios Bizantinos) and organises regular scientific meetings, as well as courses and seminars, not only to put in contact Spanish and Spanish speaker researchers of different fields interested in Byzantium, but also to make this field of study public in general.
It is located in Madrid, Spain, at the Centre of Social and Human Sciences of the Spanish National Research Council (Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas).
