Dear colleagues,
As
you surely know, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in
association with various Greek Institutions, such as the Municipality of
Thessaloniki which has been its most loyal partner so far, has
organized Summer Schools of Byzantinology in Greece during the period
2009 to 2014.
In
2015 the Summer School did not take place, mostly due to financing
issues. Nevertheless, the initiative has been a great success so far and
a large number of PhD students from all over the world have
participated in the past Schools. Many of my colleagues, as well as
students, encouraged me to continue this initiative, in a time when the
economic difficulties which affect the whole research community endanger
the continuation of the Byzantinology studies. After careful
consideration, I am inclined to begin with the organization of the 7th
Summer School, with the theme "State religion, religion for the State".
So far, I have contacted several colleagues, who are willing to
participate and the EHESS could finance their participation. However,
due to the complete lack of financing ability on the Greek side, because
of the current dramatic economic situation of the country, I am not
able to ensure scholarships to finance the students' participation
(Master's degree, doctorate or post-doc).
If
students would like to participate, I could ensure a very low cost for
them, that covers the expenses of participation, which are estimated to
be around 45 € a day and include: accommodation in a good hotel and a
dinner per day, as well as participation in the courses. The duration of
the summer school would be reduced to 10 days. Still, in order for the
Summer School to take place, it is necessary to ensure the participation
of at least twenty five to thirty students. Time is short, and I would
like your help, especially if you have students in Master's level (or
students that will attend a Master's course next academic year), PhD
students and post-docs who are interested in attending the courses by
their own means or with funding from your Universities. In the case that
in the coming week I will have the desirable requests for
participation, I will proceed with the organization.
Therefore,
I would like to ask you to discuss the issue with your students and
possible candidates, in order to have an answer the soonest possible.
Warm regards,
Paolo Odorico
