Call for Papers: *BYZANTIUM AND THE MODERN IMAGINATION. PATTERNS OF THE RECEPTION OF BYZANTIUM IN MODERN CULTURE*

BYZANTIUM AND THE MODERN IMAGINATION. PATTERNS OF THE RECEPTION OF BYZANTIUM IN MODERN CULTURE

Masaryk University, Brno
Faculty of Arts, Department of Classical Studies
12-14 September 2018

Organisers: Marketa Kulhánková (Brno, Czech Republic), Przemysław Marciniak (Katowice, Poland)

The conference is organised as part of the activities of the "Byzantine Receptions Network. Towards a New Field of Reception Studies"; generously funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung.

The imagery of Byzantium in popular discourse is a culturally and historically constructed notion. As has been noted, the very name “Byzantium” is both a retronym and an exonym, and scholars today very often insist on using a more proper description – “The Eastern Roman Empire”. Writers, playwrights, musicians, and politicians throughout centuries constructed their own versions of Byzantium, which depended on local artistic or political needs. In many cases these constructed versions had very little to do with the “historical” Byzantium. Yet, at the same time, academic discourse might – and did – influence the imagery of Byzantium in the popular imagination. During the conference we would like to discuss these imaginary visions of Byzantium, including the intersections of popular and academic images of Byzantium. We also welcome papers dealing with the use (and abuse) of key events in Byzantine history (such as the Fall of City) and their reworkings in literature and culture.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • The reception of Byzantium in schoolbooks in Europe and beyond;
  • Byzantium for the young – Byzantium in children's literature and games;
  • Literary reworkings of key events and personages in the history of Byzantium;
  • Byzantine Studies and its influence on the popular understanding of Byzantium;
  • The ways of popularising Byzantium;
  • Byzantium in the digital age;
  • Byzantium in popular culture (games, speculative fiction, TV series, films).

Please send the abstract (no more than 300 words) for a 20 minutes presentation to Przemysław Marciniak (przemyslaw.marciniak@us.edu.pl) by March, 30 2018.

Call for Papers: Byzantine Poetry in the ‘Long’ Twelfth Century (1081-1204): Perceptions, Motivations and Functions (Viena, 2018)

Call for Papers

Byzantine Poetry in the ‘Long’ Twelfth Century (1081-1204): Perceptions, Motivations and Functions

Conference, Vienna - Austrian Academy of Sciences,
Institute for Medieval Research, Division of Byzantine Research
13-15 June 2018

The time span between the ascension of Alexios I Komnenos to the throne (1081) and the fall of Constantinople to the Latins (1204) is marked by striking historical and socio-cultural developments that influenced many aspects of the contemporary literary production. This holds true especially for texts written in verse, the production of which is much larger than in any other century in middle and late Byzantine times. The twelfth century can thus be described as the ‘golden age’ of Byzantine poetry, since it flourished throughout the entire period both in Constantinople and the periphery of the empire (e.g. Southern Italy, and Athens in the late twelfth century). However, it is not only its amount that determines the significant place of Komnenian poetry in Byzantine literary and social culture. Many literary novelties are closely associated with the poetry of this period, such as the unprecedented use of literature for ceremonial and didactic purposes at the court, or the emergence of vernacular works. While the poetry of this period maintains many features of texts written in other periods, at the same time it undergoes a transformation acquiring a distinguished character. Even though many texts have received due scholarly attention, our picture of poetic production is still vague and fragmentary.
This conference aims to acquire a more nuanced picture of twelfth-century poetry (both secular and religious) by exploring various aspects and functions of poetic texts written during this period. We therefore invite abstracts that concern works from the time of Niketas of Herakleia and Theophylaktos of Ochrid up to the time of Michael Choniates and Efthymios Tornikes.
Questions and topics that might be addressed include:
  • How do twelfth-century authors perceive the composition of texts in prose and verse? Do they make a clear differentiation between the two forms? Do they include such discussions in their works?
  • What poetic trends and practices are continuous throughout the twelfth century? How do poetic genres transform? Do new poetic genres emerge during this period?
  • What are the circumstances of poetry’s function in court, educational, ecclesiastical and intellectual settings during this long period? For example, what is the connection to contemporary developments in twelfth-century educational settings, such as the flourishing of schedography and exegetical literature?
  • What are the driving motivations behind the composition of verse? Do they differ from other periods? For instance, what is the link between patronage and the composition of poetry in the twelfth century? Does the role of patronage remain fixed or are there changes throughout this long period?
  • How do authors construct their self-representation in their poems? How does the use of verse influence the shape of an intellectual persona? Should we always identify the first-person narrator with the poet? What is the role of reality and fiction in Komnenian poetry?
  • What ancient and Byzantine models do the Komnenian poets make use of? How do these models influence twelfth-century poetry in terms of genre, content and metric tendencies?
  • How did poetry circulate (written and orally) in the twelfth century and beyond? What is the impact of Komnenian poetry on the Palaeologan period? What are the later contexts of use of Komnenian poems?
  • What parallel developments mark Greek and Latin poetry of the period? What happens in places that, geographically, stand in between, such as southern Italy?

This, of course, is a provisional list of questions to which we are happy to add more suggestions. Moreover, we welcome papers on editorial projects of twelfth-century poems that are in progress.

Please send a title of your paper and an abstract (max. 300 words) to Andreas Rhoby (andreas.rhoby@oeaw.ac.at) no later than October 15, 2017. The speakers will be notified by mid-November. Travel and accommodation expenses (3 nights) will be covered.
Papers will be delivered in the following form: 20 min. presentation, 10 min. respondent’s note, 15 min. discussion.

CALL FOR PAPERS: Narrating Power and Authority in Late Antique and Medieval Hagiographies

CALL FOR PAPERS

Narrating Power and Authority in Late Antique and Medieval Hagiographies from East to West

International Conference at Academia Belgica (Rome, Italy)
Thursday 15th-Saturday 17th February 2018

In hagiographies, saints often confront a number of obstacles and it is their conduct in faith that marks them as saints; women and men who stand apart and are presented as exemplars to be modeled. Often, and this is especially the case of martyr acts, the obstacles are of a religiopolitical nature and the focus of the saint’s conduct is her/his defiance. However, there are instances, especially within the medieval Sufi context, where the relationships between saints and rulers are more nuanced, depicting a symbiotic relationship, where both parties draw upon the authority of the other. There are also those cases in which authority belongs neither to the saint or the king but to ordinary people from across the socio-political and religious spectrum.
In recent years, there has been interest in exploring these relationships as depicted in histories, hagiographies, and martyr acts and recent studies have shed light on the concept of sainthood, doctrine, and more generally, the history of various societies. However, the literary aspects of these narratives remain underexplored despite the wealth of information such analyses offer on the socio-cultural and political thought world of various courts and societies across the Indo-Mediterranean world.

This conference takes a diachronic and cross-cultural approach to the study of power and authority from above (courts/saints) and below (saints/ordinary people). We invite papers from scholars who work on different types of late antique and medieval hagiographical narratives (Lives, Martyr Acts, hagiographical romances) working on Persian, Arabic, Syriac, Georgian, Coptic, Armenian, Greek, and Latin hagiographical texts. Of particular interest are papers that will explore:

• how texts construct and understand the roles of saints and rulers vis-à-vis one another (positive, negative,     symbiotic/exploitative)
• how authority is negotiated between saints and the populace
• the power of the life of the saint after death (relics, the authority of hagiographers)
• the role of characterization in the portrayal of figures of power and authority (stock characters, intermediaries, secondary figures)
• audience milieu and reader reception
• literary history

Understanding Hagiography and its Textual Tradition:
the Late Antique and the Early Medieval Period (6th-11th centuries)
University of Lisbon, October 24-26, 2018

Between the sixth and the eleventh century, passions, lives of saints, translations of relics, miracles and other hagiographical genres underwent a remarkable process of transmission and rewriting. This conference aims at producing a fresh look at the transmission and the evolution of these crucial pieces of the spiritual and cultural life in the early Middle Ages. It will explore manuscript and textual traditions and literary reshaping, both in the history of the hagiographic genre and in the evolutionary process of the specific texts, without overlooking their function as pieces of a cult or simply of edification.
Call for papers
The papers should focus on hagiographic texts (passions, lives of saints, translations of relics, miracles and other hagiographic pieces) produced between the sixth and the eleventh centuries, as well as on hagiographic books (passionaries, legendaries and other sorts of compilation) composed before the late eleventh century.
Main thematic lines
· Transformation of the hagiographic text, both at the linguistic and at the literary level, generating new versions (by abbreviation, amplification or otherwise)
· Textual history and manuscript tradition
· Creation, evolution and transmission of passionaries, legendaries and other sorts of compilation.
Keynote speakers:François Dolbeau, Guy Philippart, Carmen Codoñer, Monique Goullet, Paolo Chiesa, Rosalind Love, Mark Humphries, Patrick Henriet, Paulo Farmhouse Alberto
Organization: Paulo Farmhouse Alberto, Paolo Chiesa, Monique Goullet

Conferencia del Instituto Séneca (UC3M): «The Lives of the Codex Iustinianus»

In the light of the new English translation of the Codex Iustinianus published in 3 volumes by Cambridge University Press (2016), this paper will explore the history of the Code and its text from the creation of the two successive Code editions issued in 529 and 534 down to the present day. This includes the use of the Code in teaching and practice in the empire, and the subsequent the fate of the Code and its manuscripts in both east and west, which meant that the Code did not survive intact, while a revised “Vulgate” became standard in the western medieval Civil Law tradition. Then there is the story of the recreation of the text in the early modern period leading down to the now classic editions by Krüger (both 1877). Finally, there will be consideration of the translation of the Code into English by Judge Blume of Wyoming and how this has been edited into the new Cambridge translation.
